covid diary Sunday 31st May 2020- Level 2 Day 18

Light winds, overcast & mild.

The map below wasn't updated. It didn't update until after 2pm so, as the API for this is automated it may have scraped before the changes, so still has older data.
A slack day watching Jeeves series yesterday. Not that many new stories, just same ones reprocessed, still amusing.
The Google Maps tutorial operational, I want to experiment with a couple of tweeks.
Getting a bit flat on the React/Node stuff at the moment, I've lost focus on the project. I need to identify something specific to build.

covid diary Saturday 30th May 2020- Level 2 Day 17

Weather a bit blustery and overcast. A bit of a northerly. Long Weekend, Queens Birthday Monday.
It feels chill, 10 deg C and 90% humidity.
I went to Zealandia yesterday, and did walk around upper dam and saw about 8-10 saddleback birds. First time I've seen them, they were very gregarious and stuck together as a group, quite noisy, in someways like the Kaka but looked like blackbirds. Zealandia free from Thursday 28th through to end of June, so wintertime when its quite. No tuataras to be seen, I suppose too cold, so may be hibernating. Apparently they do.

Seems to be another peak of about 117k of new cases on the chart above.
Not much news in the States on passing 100k deaths. Not being well managed over there.
Down to one active case in NZ, in Auckland.

A chat with Sky yesterday evening on API's. There ae static ones (JSON,Text) and dynamic ones, the dynamic ones generally have server back end, rather than just a database request there is the request that comes in and then to hide the database, and depending on level of access (hierarchy of user access via password etc) in server info is packaged and then sent back to use, so the database content is hidden, and only the packaged response is returned, so can vary content based on user's access status.
Also instead of CRUD its BREAD  & CRUCS, you don't delete but store old records.
I modified the cafeApp to make a notes app that adds/deletes so quick and dirty. It doesn't fit on the phone page too well, so may need to look at CSS but simple to use. I may develop it further.

covid diary Friday 29th May 2020- Level 2 Day 16

Another stillish day, overcast but nice. Zealandia free until end of June so I may go along there to have a look.

covid diary Thursday 28th May 2020- Level 2 Day 15

Clouds, but clear, nice sunrise. Wind has dropped so good day for walk at beach.

Gist's need to be explored as endpoints for api's, also kepler.gl for mapping. I would like to do the google maps mapping with react tutorial today.

covid diary Wednesday 27th May 2020- Level 2 Day 14

A breezy, overcast, cool day.

I got the raw next.js static site generated, but that needs a back end to run. So hosted on vercel (Zeit).
I'm back to Hugo today, I found a way in a video to be able to host it on Github in the same directory as the code.
You need to make a /docs directory in the project and host the static stuff there, then you can point Github pages to that directory and it'll work fine. So generate code on your pc add/commit/push changes.

Potato Soup & Minestrone Soup

The weather is cooling and I want some soups.  I am near the end of the month so shopping is not a goer until the beginning of the next month when in funds. So, whats in the cupboard.
I have some potatoes so I wanted to use them so:

Potato soup

This I just chopped up what was in thre cupboard. I've put the vid in below but I made up a recipe.

  • A few rashers of bacon, browned in some lard, then I removed bacon and put in
  • 2 small onions,
  • 4 cloves of garlic
  • big carrot.
Those were browned then I put in
  • two tablespoons of flour and browned that off, then put in some
  • stock, I had one cup of chicken stock I'd made and I put in 2 oxo cubes of chicken stock and stirred that all up.
  • 4 medium to small potatoes diced up and thrown in
and let it simmer.  It was a bit glutenous with the flour and I added some water.
  • rosemary powder. I was a bit heavyhanded with that
  • ground pepper
  • bay leaves
  • parsley
Toasted ciabatta.
  • milk to the bowl
I tried to avoid salt as the oxo cubes usually have a fair dose of it. I added milk to the bowl so if I freeze some of the soup there wont be any dairy in it.

Very hearty and filling.
Next time I'll be lighter on the rosemary.
There were recipes that loaded it with cheese and cream but I just wanted a simple soup that was not too heavy.

The pot has enough for 3 portions. I may freeze one of them so I can think about a minestrone soup.
Its nice to have some backupsin the freezer for a handy luch on a cool day.

I've had a goo for

Minestrone soup

Both the videos below look excellent:
I have most of the ingredients apart from cabbage/kale so I may hold off on this until a shop. If the weather stays cool I'll improvise.

covid diary Tuesday 26th May 2020- Level 2 Day 13

Weather poor. I heard a plane but looking out at airport the lights do not seem to be on at 6.30. They are on again at 7am

I've found a next.js tutorial that renders a simple blog to static html from markup from a basic boilerplate code start point. Next is good for dynamic routing to pages, so good to explore, as well as markdown and static pages and builds, then I need to think about deploy, although that may be hugo and vercel? (zeit).
There were some good ones for react and google and mapbox tutorials and clusters that I'd like to do too.
This guys does the vids on maps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWVW8IqpQ-A

covid diary Monday 25th May 2020- Level 2 Day 12

Weather misty, rainy yucky. Earthquake this morning

I seem to be expanding out exponentialy with node.js, react, firebase cloud functions, Jamstack, gatsby, hugo, sanity, netlify, vercel(zeit) , storybook, next.
There is so much to absorb. I need to find a way to focus on getting something produced so that I have some firm footings to build upon.

Building a RESTful API with Cloud Functions and Firestore app is not going well, I dont see to be able to connect to the database, which is frustrating.

Finally got it all working which is great. Also got Functios deployed, ready for use in doing a front end exercise.
Definitely moist and cool today , southerlies, 10 degrees, humidity 87% (so damp cold) and raining. A transformation in the weather form the previous days of May.
